The Complete Deduction Checklist
Every dollar of legitimate business expenses reduces both your income tax AND self-employment tax. The IRS allows deductions for expenses that are ordinary and necessary for your business. Keep detailed records of all expenses throughout the year.
Home Office Deduction
If you use part of your home regularly and exclusively for business: simplified method gives $5/sq ft up to 300 sq ft (max $1,500). The regular method calculates actual expenses (mortgage interest, utilities, insurance) prorated by the percentage of your home used for business.
Health Insurance Premiums
100% deductible for self-employed individuals, their spouse, and dependents. This includes health, dental, and long-term care insurance. No need to itemize — it's an above-the-line deduction on Form 1040.
Retirement Plan Contributions
SEP IRA: Contribute up to 25% of net earnings, max $69,000 for 2026. Solo 401(k): Employee deferral up to $23,500 ($31,000 if 50+) plus employer contribution up to 25% of compensation, total max $69,500. Both dramatically reduce taxable income while building retirement savings.
Vehicle & Travel Expenses
Standard mileage rate: $0.70 per mile for business driving. Or actual expenses: gas, insurance, repairs, depreciation. Business travel (airfare, hotels, 50% meals) is deductible when away from your tax home overnight.
Equipment, Software, and Supplies
Section 179 allows immediate deduction of up to $1,250,000 for qualifying equipment. Computers, software subscriptions, office supplies, and industry-specific tools are fully deductible in the year purchased.
Education and Professional Development
Courses, certifications, conferences, books, and training directly related to your current business are deductible. Note: education qualifying you for a new career is NOT deductible.
Professional Services
Legal fees, accounting services, tax preparation, business consulting, and professional memberships are fully deductible. Use our self-employment tax calculator to see how these deductions reduce your total tax.
